I had a heck of a time trying to get the right rear wheel bearing out of the hub do to the speedometer driving sleeve or nut with two little 1/4" cut-outs on opposite sides of the sleeve or nut. I finally figured it out that it is reversed threads. I did not see in the work manuel that it was reversed threads. I have the standard rear wheel hub that is not the quick release type on a 1970 Bonney.

It sounds like you have a conical hub rear wheel. These were introduced for the 1971 oil in frame models and yes they are a left hand thread. Most of the hubs I have seen have LH stamped on them.
